AWARDS 2020 GOLD
“Let’s fly out with a phoenix to the night sky.
Let’s gather lights and sounds with fellow birds. “
In the VR space, I aimed at creating a work which allows us to advance the story by performing interactive music and creating sceneries.
For example, You can use the controller to call others and make a starry sky.
Please see, listen and feel the breathtaking sceneries which are colored by music being made and changed by players.
This time, I used Generative Art many times to create sceneries in this work. I used birds, cityscape and the starry sky with multiple programming languages.
The breathtaking sceneries and music which are enjoyed in VR can be brought into the real world. This time, I also made "Birds of a Scape AR" which is an AR work.
VR HMD is required for the ultra experience of the work. Learn how to experience it here.

Many Japanese may automatically think of Osamu Tezuka's "Firebird" when they hear the word "phoenix. The Firebird, his life's work, can be regarded as a classic of XR, depicting the essence of life and eternal life beyond time and space. But what about this "Birds of a Scape"? Does the setting of a phoenix that has never been of use to others, but only lives, mean that it can be an idol in both the future and the past? No, it is not. This generative world of sound and light creates a "bird of light" that is as innocent as the "firebird" in its unpredictable circular motion. Birds of a Scape, which repeats infinitely in a circular motion, also functions as AR, purifying the physical space. You can feel the pulse of young talent in this work!!!!

I selected this work with the expectation that it will evolve through the creation of further mechanisms and output without destroying the worldview and experience of the work.

Riding on the back of a phoenix, you fly through the air. The presence of the experiencer is essential for calling fellow birds and collecting lights and sounds. Each time you call your friends with the controller, the sky you are flying in becomes your scenery, and each time you operate the controller, you will hear various sounds. The poetic view of the world, where scenery is created only when you participate in the story of birds, light, and sound, warmed my heart.

The overall framework design of this work, combining music and landscape experience, is very high quality, and I felt that further refinement of the visuals over time would make it an even more interesting and perfected VR game. We selected it for GOLD in the sense that we would like to see more effort put into upgrading it in the future.

Birds of a Scape is an experience with heart and a unique language of interaction, inviting body movement and co-creation. It embraced VR's unique capability to activate the user's body in virtual space, and it did so in an evocative, artistic way. Because the narrative of Birds of a Scape is informed by each user's motion, every person leaves behind their own synesthetic signature. The inclusion of generative elements added an extra degree of surprise and richness.
