This art work expresses “boundaries in unconsciousness.” Meanings in the the title The “ne.” is a part of the word, ‘Network’, and “mui” means ‘no deliberate meaning’ in Japanese. Also “mui” can mean: “having no will,” “no intentional,” and “ being unconscious.” The title, “ne.mui,” is a compound word of these two, and the sound of “NEMUI” in Japanese has a meaning of ‘sleepy.’

Ne.mui feels like falling down a new-aesthetic rabbit hole, into a series of dream worlds. Its huge, confusing, disorienting and inconsistent, but that somehow seems to reenforce the themes of boundaries, identity and sleep. Ono made an interesting observation, that when we sleep, we slip between consciousness and unconsciousness. She asks you, as a VR avatar, where your consciousness is, and how people in a VR world should be described. This separation of body and consciousness is a new state, and maybe dreams are the closest things we have to describe it. Like dreams, ne.mui is memorable but hard to describe, sometimes fun or cute, but also cut with a kind of sinister existential darkness. The projects suffers from some technical problems, and sometimes feels a bit hostile to the visitor. Despite this, it deserves recognition for using VR in its raw, pure form, to effectively explore some complex ideas.

I thought that there were a lot of unfinished parts (especially in terms of operation), but it was a personal delusional world that did not give anything to anyone. I was impressed that I expressed this as a wacky visual and an overwhelmingly large space. I enjoyed the visual feeling that changed as I proceeded through the space without getting tired (but the feeling of operation was bad ...), and it was impressive that there was a part that seemed "cool" as visual art . I feel that incompleteness is a factor that I want to expect next in a good sense, so if there is a next work, I will expect to smoothly immerse in an overwhelming and unusual visual world.

It was a work with a high amount of heat, composed of a vast space, with the theme of “borderline in the unconscious”. Although it is a theme with a high degree of abstraction, I think that it has succeeded in creating a unique interpretation and a world view based on it by carefully creating “boundary lines” and changes in the world inside and outside it. It is also a dreaming experience of reality and dreams. This VR expression technique and its technology are inextricably linked to the author's own personal experience and his body, and it is strongly realized that it is embodied like a physical material such as paint or clay and used unconsciously. I felt the possibility of a new VR work.
