NEWVIEW FEST 2021, an XR ultra-event fusing the real world with the virtual.

Launched in January 2018, this digest presents the history of NEWVIEW, a simultaneous global experimental project that pioneers, expands and infects the design of creative expression and experience in three-dimensional space.

The 26 finalists have been selected from 152 entries from 15 countries for the NEWVIEW AWARDS 2021. The works have been selected for their ambitious approach to exploring the perception of reality, physicality, narrative and entertainment.

NEWVIEW SCHOOL is a new school of expression where students learn "XR as a comprehensive art form". Students from Japan, London, Taipei and New York will exhibit their graduation works. The space is designed by the students.

NEWVIEW CYPHER is a community for freestyle XR expression of creativity in all genres. Under the slogan "Break The Border", 33 artists from the three genres of "graphic", "music", and "fashion" will present their works.

Lu Yang (b. Shanghai, China) is a multimedia artist based in Shanghai. Mortality, androgyny, hysteria, existentialism and spiritual neurology feed Lu’s jarring and at times morbid fantasies. Also taking inspiration and resources from Anime, gaming and Sci-fi subcultures, Lu explores his fantasies through mediums including 3D animation, immersive video game installation, holographic, live performances, virtual reality, and computer programming. Lu has collaborated with scientists, psychologists, performers, designers, experimental composers, Pop Music producers, robotics labs, and celebrities throughout his practice.

Luigi (b.1986, Paris) is a visual artist based in Tokyo. He was trained as a sculptor at Musashino Art University, where he currently holds a position as a lecturer. His practice explores the medium of physical matter and CGI, using computer graphics to search for
new sculptural forms, movements and processes. His work investigates the balance between the slow pace and proximity to materials of physical sculpting and the very fast pace of digital sculpting and rendering. His practice explores the meaning of reality
and virtuality, matter and data, beauty and the uncanny.

Her most recent works are inspired by the post-post apocalyptic visions of digitized - self healing and therapy based archetypes. Marta also works as a Technical Artist for the VR studio PatchXR that focuses on a new form of intersensory art. She is also a part of YCY, a company that is paving the way to AR digital fashion. Her digital work was exhibited in multiple digital exhibitions curated by SuperRare and MakersPlace. Yixuan Liu is a visual player, new media art explorer and virtual world-building enthusiast, as well as a subcultural fashion lover and science admirer.

Kyle Li is a playful experience designer working and living in New York City. Rory Scott is a multidisciplinary artist, whose work is recognized for its use of patterns, glitter and for its likeness to the Universe. Through both digital and handmade means, Scott explores the ideas of impermanence, the passage of time and the impacts of technology upon the evolution of humanity. Through recorded thoughts, sounds and use of retro sci-fi imagery, her work confronts and reconciles the passage of time by juxtaposing the old with the new. The prominence of patterns in her work, draws parallels between the existence of patterns in nature and in the rhythm of our thoughts and lives. Illustrating repetition creates form over time.

Maari Sugawara is an interdisciplinary artist based in Tkaronto/Toronto, Tokyo, and Shenzhen. She completed her Master’s of Fine Arts as a Dean’s scholarship student at the Interdisciplinary Master's in Art, Media, and Design (IAMD) at OCAD University in 2021, after receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 2017 from Waseda University. She engages with the intersection of Japanese Studies, Speculative Fiction, Decolonial Studies, Gender Studies, and Digital Media. Growing up as a racialized, queer woman with Autism Spectrum Disorder in England from the age of ten, issues of gender, racialized, and marginalized identity have been central to her research. Uchida is a conceptual performance artist and researcher who calls herself a “Bender” for the post-Internet era. She uses existing systems such as Amazon and YouTube in an approach that transforms the order of these circuits and questions the values and given usages that permeate our daily lives.
Her work often relates to the concept of Japanese “ie” (家). Ie is past Japanese familiy system, but it still remains. It is based on Patriarchal concept and contains “house”, “home”, “family”, even “company”. She performs in the system as a user by bending the rules, and tries to live together with what she cannot control.
Her major exhibitions and projects include “TRANS BOOKS DOWNLOADs” (online) from 2020 and “SICF19 Winners Exhibition” (Spiral Hall, Tokyo) in 2019.

After the outbreak of the pandemic caused by COVID-19 in 2020, the perception of the distance between people has changed dramatically.
Before Corona, the close presence of others in live music venues and clubs provided a unique and unusual feeling of excitement that could only be experienced in such places. Nowadays, the number of visitors to such music events is limited, and the sense of the extraordinary that can be obtained in a space where others exist in close proximity is fading.　The theme of this work is the distance between people in a VR space.　Through this work, I would like to think about the distance between people.
